August is officially here and locals are flocking to parks and shorelines in the sunshine. Although there’s been a seemingly endless line-up of festivals and events, this week’s big highlights have been the Celebration of Light fireworks (which wrap up on Saturday).

These fireworks are as beautiful as our city, but events like these are marred by drunken hooligans. We need to protect our town, Vancouverites. Step up. Stop the mayhem.

What kind of country-fried rube is still impressed by 10 minutes of fireworks? If the bridge and tunnel crowd want to stare slack-jawed at lights in the sky, let them do it in their own neighbourhoods and on their own dime. As a Vancouver resident and taxpayer, I’m sick of footing the bill for policing and clean-up, not to mention having to deal with hordes of drunken, violent assholes and they mess they leave behind. Cancel this boondoggle now, or move it out to Surrey.
