Friday Link Fest: Weekend Warmup

Comments 5 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The weekend is here and with so many events happening throughout the month I’ve decided to focus only on those taking place over the next few days.

Qila and Calf @ The Vancouver Aquarium

  • The Vancouver Aquarium is prepared to welcome a new baby beluga calf to the world as Aurora is on 24-hour delivery watch. You might even be able to catch it all on webcam. Her daughter Qila gave birth to Tiqa last June.
  • The Kitsilano Farmers Market kicks off its 2009 season this weekend.
  • There is a Beach BBQ Tweetup on Saturday at Spanish Banks.
  • There’s another Tweetup with Michael Pollan this weekend at the UBC Farm.
  • Latincouver is launching Saturday June 6th and tickets are still available for the celebration (@latincouver on Twitter)
  • Hats off Day, where local merchants take their ‘hats off’ for the community is Saturday on Hastings in Burnaby. There will be a street party, activities for the family, and a parade.
  • Collingwood Days 2009 begin with a parade (at Joyce & Kingsway) this Saturday.
  • Saturday is also the 9th annual Vancouver landfill open house. It’s a free event where you can get a guided tour the landfill and learn about how the system works.
  • This Sunday, June 7th, is National Cancer Survivor Day.
  • The HSBC Childrun for the BC Childrens Hospital is also Sunday June 7th at 9:00am.
  • This isn’t happening until next Friday but it’s worth mentioning that Megaphone Magazine is hosting an anniversary event. I had the pleasure of contributing to one of their recent issues and discovering the brilliance of their publication. The celebration will take place at the Interurban Gallery on E. Hastings.
  • Last but not least, June will be a big month for Miss604 contests and the first, which will have a Father’s Day theme, is set to be announced on Tuesday morning.

      Lots of good stuff!

If anyone is going to the BC Children’s Hospital Childrun, I’m the photographer. If you see me, say “hi.” I’ll take your photo and send you a copy!

It’s so sad that we would exploit these magnificent whales for our weekend entertainment. They don’t belong in little tanks. They belong in the ocean where they can swim as they were meant to. And they especially should face the indignity of being a show that we watch.

Oops, I meant “And they especially shouldn’t face the indignity of being a show that we watch.”

      Just an FYI.

Aurora is Tiqa’s grandmother. Qila gave birth to Tiqa last June. The gestational period of a beluga whale is something like 15 months,so if Aurora is due now, she had to be pregnant before the birth of Tiqa.

Besides, the male has been in a different tank since Tiqa’s birth, so I don’t think that either one has had any contact with a male since the birth of Qila.

@StraySparrow you are totally correct. Aurora and Imaq (the male) were separated from Qila when Tiqa was born last year.
