Friday Morning Link Fest: Cause and Event Roundup

Comments 2 by Rebecca Bollwitt

This week started off with a panel at the HTCE where Steve Pratt, Gillian Shaw and I talked about social media and Twitter. Follow that with the NHL Tweetup and the Meet n Tweet last night and the last few days have just been so positive. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many new and exciting people so here are a few events that have been put on my radar along with some regular items:

  • Throughout April Kimm (@paddlinggeek on Twitter) is doing Comments for a Cause on her blog. She will donate $1 for each comment during the campaign to the MS Society.
  • This coming Tuesday is the monthly Third Tuesday meetup and we’ll have Tris Hussey as our speaker. Third Tuesday began as a PR and marketing meetup but has naturally evolved into an all-out social media get together with a great line up of speakers each month. I won’t be liveblogging this one but I’ll be covering the evening through tweets and photos.
  • Grouse Mountain is running a cocktail recipe contest for their Altitudes Bistro. Submit your creation by April 30th for your chance to win a dining experience for four at Altitudes and to have your creation added to the Summer 2009 menu.
  • I included a mention of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Earth Weekend events during my Earth Day roundup and have just received a few more details. On April 25 and 26th the Aquarium will have: The 7th Annual Good-bye Salmon Fry tours at 11:45, 1:45, 2:45 and 3:45 each day (this is where you get to actually release a salmon fry yourself, right into the BC Hydro salmon stream in Stanley Park), E-waste recycling outside the facility (thanks to Fresh Start Recycling), Earth themed crafts & face painting, Earth friendly tips from Aquarium staff, scavenger hunt for a chance to win a sea otter encounter for two, and more.
  • Thursday April 28th is Daymaker Day in Vancouver and one group is setting out to make the day of sick kids, their families, and their caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Easter Seal House, Sunny Hill Health Centre and SOS Children’s Village. They will be offered complimentary haircuts, nail painting, hand massages and stress relieving treatments courtesy of Megahair Family.
  • Il Nido Restaurant Bar will be donating 20% of their sales on April 23rd to eathquake victims in Italy.
  • May 1st is LocalDay on Twitter in conjunction with #CanTags — it’s a move to encourage you to tweet using the first part of your city’s name or postal code so that people can filter through the best local information on Twitter.
  • If you were able to make it to the Launch It event on Thursday (or not) consider stopping by the follow up, Make It happening May 1-3 in Yaletown.

It’s game two tonight of the Canucks and Blue series, puck drops at 7:00pm and the Twitter conversation is ongoing.
