Comments 1 by Rebecca Bollwitt

WOW I’m REALLY behind on my Amazing Race coverage so let’s just hop right to it (recaps for episodes 7 and 8 will follow shortly, to get all this up to date).

Episode 5:

Rank at the beginning of the leg:

1. AH – Brother/Sister
2. NJ – Dating Couple
3. RC – Father/Daughter
4. ND – Grampa/Grandson
5. KV – The Goths
6. SJ – The Blonds
7. RTK – The New Hippies

Location: Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

First clue: Fly to Vilnius, Lithuania. Upon landing, drive one of the marked cars to St. Ann’s Church to find their next clue.

This episode was about airport booking confusion and the Blonds bombsheling each other. Teams were instructed to book flights at Air France outlets only (or at the Air France post in the airport). There was a scramble across town to internet cafes, and to the airport kiosks. Some teams had some good luck with English-speaking booking agents, while others were left frustrated. They were mostly trying to get the 1:25 or 1:35 arrival times for Frankfurt and within the confines of Air France’s office at the airport the Blonds “showed their true colours” by barking at other teams. Jennifer, the Blond with a conscience, didn’t want to burn any bridges while Shana was just playing the game and taking no prisoners.

Upon landing teams had to find their cars and drive to St. Anne’s.

Second Clue: ROADBLOCK – One team member had to find a local Lithuanian woman who would give them a package and tell them where to take it. Walking and running on foot through the alleys and streets of the village, they had to deliver the package to a specific person (that they had to find) who would give them a final package which they had to take to one of four locations to complete the task.

Some teams breezed right through, using their people skills and remembering the verbal instructions from the women and the other folks who received their parcels. However Nick kept looking for a “salon” when he should have been saying the specific name of the location – which was a lot easier to convey across the language barrier. As a result, they were were of the first teams there, and the LAST to leave the ROADBLOCK.

Third Clue: When the ROADBLOCK was complete, teams had to drive to Rumsiskes and find Lietuvos Liaudies Buities Muziejus, a Lithuanian “outdoor ethnographic museum”.

Fourth Clue: Once teams made it there they had to scour a farm for the Travelocity gnome, that was placed amongst 100 others.

Fifth Clue: After finding the specific Travelocity gnome teams ripped open the next clue which contained a DETOUR. The choice was “Count Down” or “Step Up”. In “Count Down” they had to count fence posts on a picket fence (there were over 700). In “Step Up” teams had to get on stilts and walk down a path among locals in traditional festival masks and costumes.

Several teams tried the stilts and those who couldn’t make it just went over to the counting Detour anyway. The Dating couple spazzed on each other and Nate called his woman “a bitch”, while the Blonds continued their moral struggles and the Goths just had a lot of fun, “Vyxsin and I love to play dress up and we were surrounded by kindred souls that made us feel ‘normal’.” Personally, I would never to the “counting” challenges because they always seem the most frustrating, then you doubt yourself and have to count ALL over again. As teams completed the DETOUR they headed to the mat.

Rank at the mat:

1. RTK – The New Hippies
2. KV – The Goths
3. RC – Father/Daughter
4. AH – Brother/Sister
5. NJ – Dating Couple – Nate, the sweet-talker and his “bitch” who he says it “the ugliest person” he’s ever met.
6. ND – Grampa/Grandson

Eliminated: SJ – The Blonds “We come from a comfortable life. We get manicures and pedicures and facials and you come here and all of that goes out the window. I’m just amazed about what we’ve accomplished.”

Episode 6:

1. RTK – The New Hippies

First clue: Fly to Croatia, then teams must travel to the base of the Fort of St Laurence, where they will find their next clue. Teams rush to make reservations, and to get to the airport for internet access. Since the airline ticket booth doesn’t open until at least 4:00am, teams camp out outside one airline, meanwhile Ron and Christina made a successful reservation already, from a nearby hotel – confirming a flight that arrives at 11:20am. The Goths realize they shouldn’t put all their eggs in one basket, and head to the first ticket office available while everyone else second-guesses their decision to line up.

Teams end up booking on two flights: one through Prague (leaves at 6:00am – RTK, ND) and another through Warsaw (leaves at 6:25am – The Goths, NJ, RC), both arrive at 11:20am. As AH go to check in they are told they booked Business Class, which is prohibited on The Amazing Race. They rush back to the ticket office and book through Frankfurt, they’re told their competitors flying through Prague will experience delays. RTK and ND end up in Prague, missing their connection. RTK reroute through Vienna and ND rebook via Zagreb. NJ land first in Croatia with RC and the Goths close behind.

Second Clue: ROADBLOCK – who has a builders’ eye? One person from each team must search through a pile of 150 stones for one of eight stones that will fit in a wall. When the successfully fit the stone, they will be handed their next clue. RC complete the Roadblock before any other team even finds the clue.

Third Clue: Make your way to the roof of the Fort of St Lawrence, then ride a tandem zip line to their next clue.

Fourth Clue: RC, way ahead of the pack at this point discover the DETOUR: Short and Long or Long and Short.

Short and Long: Repel down from the roof of the Fort to a base then scale another wall with a rope ladder. Then find a plaza where the next clue is located. The physical part of this option is short, but navigating to the streets to the plaza will be confusing.

Long and Short: Use a tandem zip line to fly to the water below the Fort and swim to a floating platform. Pick a fishing boat, row around the harbour and find the next clue in the same plaza as option one. The physical part of this is longer but the trip to plaza is shorter.

Ron and Christina as well as Nathan and Jen both zip to the water and row, which strains Ron physically while Nate gets frustrated with his girlfriend, “I hate you I hate you! I hate you with a passion!”

The Goths repel down the wall in Short and Long, “go little pink kitten!”.

Fifth Clue: (RC and NJ) Travel four miles by taxi to find the Stone Cross, which will be the pit stop for this leg of the race. Nate and Jen are refused a taxi ride because they’re wet from getting out of their row boat. “This is so unfair! No it’s not okay our relationship SUCKS.” They hop into a car with a local instead so when they arrive to the pit stop (in SECOND place) they are forced to return to town and COME BACK with a “race legal form of transportation.” This allows the Goths to catch up and come in second.

Meanwhile RTK are just completing the Roadblock and Grampa/Grandson and AH are just landing in Croatia. These remaining teams scramble to complete the tasks, with AH close on ND’s tail.

Rank at the mat:

1. RC – Building their Father/Daughter relationship
2. KV – The Goths
3. NJ – Dead relationship walking
4. RTK – Super cute hippie couple
5. ND – Grampa/Grandson

Eliminated: AH – Just some bad luck with flight selection essentially nothing super dramatic, no talk of manicures or how they never want to be brother and sister ever again.
