In line with such silly geeky posts as those verification codes you can never read [604] and battle of the fonts [604] I find myself compelled to comment about something I was reading on RantVancouver yesterday. In the comment section of one of the rants, someone put “IAWTP”.

Buh? I fear I may be out of touch with the buzz words/acronyms of today or maybe I’m just not cool or 14 … I don’t see this necessarily as a bad thing, unless I want to get into ‘oh man, I must be getting old’ or feeling guilty or foolish because I actually googled “IAWTP” to see what it meant. For those out there who were as clueless as I was, straight from the Urban Dictionary online it is: Acronym: I Agree With This Post. Normally used on bulletin board systems.

I’ve never been a fan of the acronyms although I’ll say “L-O-L or B-R-B” out loud just to piss John off. When I started using IM and chatting (oooh way back in 1996) I may have used them. Since then I prefer letting the person on the receiving end know I’m actually laughing with “hehe” or “haha” because often someone will type “LOL” and ya know, I doubt they really are sheesh.

I guess my issue with “IAWTP” is not that I haven’t heard of it or don’t use it. I think in this case it’s how it was used. When you purposely click on someone’s site to leave a comment and all you put is an buzz-word acronym, it just seems lazy to me. Yes, I am ranting about a comment on a rant site.

There, I feel better. Although that lingering ‘oh dear I’m getting old and out of touch’ feeling hasn’t quite faded yet.

    IAWTP.
    LOL.
    Haha.
You know, when I type, “Haha,” it always runs through my head that Simpsons character (Nelson?) who says that a lot. =P
